Guidelines for Decision Making for Health Care Decisions:

1.  If it doesn't seem normal, it probably isn't.  Get it checked out.

Example:  If you see spots or floaters in front of your eyes, when you have never seen them before, it may be a retinal detachment, or other serious retinal pathology, which could lead to blindness.  (Fortunately, not all spots/floaters cause blindness, but until you have a retinal evaluation, the patient cannot determine themselves the seriousness of the problem from symptoms alone).

2.  Any port in a storm.

Example:  Don't wait to get home to see your doctor if you feel you need medical care while out of town.

3.  The more sudden the onset of a health problem, the sooner you should see the doctor.  Example:  If you are in an accident, or suffer an acute health problem (heart attack, stroke), you should seek care immediately.

Example:  If you get a cold/flu, and it takes a day or so for the symptoms to arise, it may be ok to wait a day or two to see your doctor.

4.  BE PROACTIVE in your healthcare.

Example:  Routine Examination doesn't always yield routine results.  It is not uncommon to find glaucoma, retinal detachments, retinal hemorrhages, retinal tumors, in totally assymptomatic patients.

CARING FOR YOUR EYEGLASSES:

1.  On your face or in the case !

2.  Don't put your eyeglasses anywhere you put your feet or your butt !

3.  Never wipe your lenses with paper products (Kleenex, paper towels, toilet paper, etc.).

4.  Always rinse your lenses with tap water to remove dust from the lenses prior to cleaning them.  You may use diluted dish soap or shampoo on most lenses to remove smudges.

5.  NEVER try to fix your own eyeglasses with super glue !   You WILL ruin your lenses, and make them difficult for us to repair !

6.  NEVER clean your lenses with ammonia (Windex) window cleaners.  Avoid getting acid on your lenses (grapefruit juice splatter).  Never wipe your lenses with acetone (finger nail polish remover).  Never expose your lenses to volatile solvents (paint thinners, other household or industrial solvents).  Chemical exposure will ruin the scratch resistant coating, Anti-Reflective Coatings, as well as tints and vacuum applied coatings on your lenses.  In addition, chemical exposure will ruin the impact resistance of many lens materials, especially polycarbonate.

7.  Don't try this at home !   Bring your eyeglasses back as needed for free adjustments and re-alignment.

8.  Wear an eyeglass chain when boating of fishing.

9.  Do not store your eyeglasses in a hot car (especially do not store them on the dashboard or on the seat in the sunlight, even on a "cool" day).

10.  Do not hang farsighted lenses (or reading glasses, or drug store "magnifers") from an eyeglass chain in direct sunlight.  You can set something on fire!

11.  Glass lenses should be replaced if there are ANY pits, scratches, or other  defects in the lens surface.  Glass lenses may spontaneously shatter when going from cold to hot, or hot to cold, environments.
